When Worlds Collide

"Soon I will take you far away from where the night threatens the day,"
-- Terry Taylor, "When Worlds Collide" from Daniel Amos' Vox Humana, 1984.

Fueled by synths forged in the furnace of the 80s, this track from the third installment of the Alarma Chronicles is a reassuring balm for a bleak day.

Some Sad Song

"Am I the only one who thinks that I'm the only one waiting for something that is never going to come, wondering if that makes me patient or does that just make me dumb?"
-- Brett Nelson, "Some Sad Song" from The Suffocation Keep's John Hughes Was Never So Wrong, 2002.

The title is apt so you might need some tissues handy, or possibly a sleeve ... or even a shoulder if you're really lucky.

Somewhere Out There

"When I'm trying to love you the best I can, I don't hold nothing back,"
-- Larry Norman, "Somewhere Out There" from Home At Last, 1989.

Emotionally authentic, but in no way saccharine, song from a rather uneven album, written as a father attempts to express difficult ideas to his young son.

The Wait

"You wait for something that'll make the waiting worth the wait,"
-- Built To Spill, "The Wait" from You In Reverse, 2006.

Melancholia gives way to beauty even in a life where satisfaction never quite seems to be within grasp. The sound of a heartbeat at the song's conclusion suggests good things come ...

Little Victories

"Everytime you make it through, it's another little victory,"
-- Bob Seger, "Little Victories" from Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band's The Distance, 1982.

Though "Shame On The Moon" was the big hit from this album, kept from #1 only by the "Billie Jean" juggernaut, this particular Seger cut is a reminder that one's true character is often forged imperceptibly and exhibited with no audience.

Never Surrender

"With a little perseverance you can get things done/ Without the blind adherence that has conquered some,"
-- Corey Hart, "Never Surrender" from Boy In The Box, 1985.

Andy Hamilton plays saxophone on this track, as he did fifteen years later for Radiohead on Kid A.

Climb That Hill

"I've got to ... drag this line over that hill one more time,"
-- Tom Petty and Mike Campbell, "Climb That Hill" from Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers' Songs And Music From The Motion Picture 'She's The One', 1996.

An encouraging song from a decent soundtrack to a film I've never seen. (I'm guessing the music is the best part of it ...)
